Craft of Observation

As a potter, have always been challenged by the craft that is required.  Maybe that is why I reacted negatively to seeing the phrase "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" given as the catch phrase of the Permaculture Principle "Observe and Interact".  This principle has little to do with beauty and very much to do with craft.The phrase implies a cultural relativism in which consumerism would be just dandy. I like the way that Matthew Crawford talks of this in Shop Class as Soulcraft.  You can…See More

How might your current work contribute to the sustainability movement?
I maintain a blog called California Greening (cagreening.blogspot.com) and have a repeated column called Green Talk in mu local community newspaper, the Morgan Hill Times.
In what ways do you personally identify with the Sustainability & Transition movement? Why are you interested?
Local action provides the only path to global solution regarding climate / energy / water.
What background and skills do you bring to this community?
I am the past chairman of the EcoAction Committee, Green Party US;. That committee has an active interest in permaculture, climate change, rural economies, etc.
