An example of local permaculture. The Sandgarden was build for $15,000 and the Food Forest cost almost $5,000. Together they take care of most of our needs. The the Food Forest is just over 10 wks old! Thanks Meleah and Jordan!

"Thanks for the YouTube trick. Much easier, quicker, and space saving. Actually, Bob had already done the trick for me. But thanks!"

Paradise

"I know this place. But now that it is nearly two months old, there is a lot less brown and a lot more green. Bob's right, it is paradise."

Sandgarden Food Forest Videos

The Sandgarden has recently published several Food Forest videos that document the work of N'Credible Edibles. Some of these (under 100mb) failed to upload to Transition CA. But they can be seen on my You Tube channel or the Celebrate Waste website. Two important ones are "Food Forest, Organic Mushroom Compost (Black Gold)" and a tour of our six week…See More

Profile Information

How might your current work contribute to the sustainability movement?
I retired from environmental activism about five years ago. Burned out. Instead my partner and I began to hand-build 'The Sandgarden'. This is our $15,000 permacultural home described at www.celebratewaste.org.

Recently, I rejoined the sustainability community and presently serve as a member of the Transition SLO steering group.
In what ways do you personally identify with the Sustainability & Transition movement? Why are you interested?
1. All ways.
2. All ways.
What background and skills do you bring to this community?
My family owned a small self-sustaining fruit/vegetable farm in SW Michigan. Living on the farm from 1940 -1956, I learned many lessons and skills of self-reliance. This contributed to a B.S. degree with majors in chemistry, physics, and biology. Later I obtained a Ph.D. in animal behavior and ecology and learned that the lessons of my youth applied.

After leaving academia in 1981 I obtained certification as a clinical psychologist and maintained a practice. I also lived on my sail boat in the Morro Bay estuary. Kayaking almost daily for years allowed me to really connect with this extraordinary organ of diverse reproduction. When Duke Energy threatened the estuary in about 1999, I joined the movement against a new power plant and learned much about all levels of environmentalism over the next 5 yrs.
Your Personal Website (if you have one)
http://www.celebratewaste.org
What aspects of the sustainability movement most interests you?
By providing real examples of transitional life and joy.
Your Favorite Books/Websites/Blogs/RSS Feeds for Information about the Sustainability Movement
Almost everything I know that is relevant to this question was obtained through Bob Banner, Hopedance listservs, or links from the Hopedance website. But now we have Transitions.

Thank you for the investment advisor recommendation, Richard! I wonder if we might organize an event where he could talk with a group of us about how to invest for change in these crazy times?

Hi Richard,
Glad to get a little background from you before the meeting on Friday. Looking forward to meeting you and the others at DD. You seem to be a multi-vocation person like me. I also left academe (in 1981) after research and teaching as a psychological anthropologist, spent over 20 years training teachers and students in cooperative/collaborative methods, and am likewise an artist and teach expressive arts for personal and societal growth. I lived in a number of places, including Uganda, Tanzania, New Zealand, and the Cook Islands: a good awakening education.
See you Friday.

Hi Richard! Great to see you here! We've just implemented some get acquainted questions so we CA folk can all get to know each other. When you're finished introducing yourself, it would be great if you could post one or two of your local events -- even if they're local, they're news and inspiration to other communities wanting to get involved.

Again, we're delighted to see you. Ask questions, have fun!
